The beaches of Athens.
Beaches to visit from Athens.
Though Athens is mostly known as a city holiday destination, there are also several beaches that can easily be reached from the city for a day out for sunbathing or for watersports.
Vouliagmeni is a beautiful peninsula, situated on the eastern edge of Athens, 20 Km from the center, known for it's beaches but also it's mineral water lake.
Varkiza or Alianthos is a beautiful suburb of Athens with a sandy beach. There is a large pay beach and next to it a small free beach. There are also some coves with small stone beaches at the entrance to the town.
Palea Fokea (or Palaia Phokea) next to Anavissos is a nice sandy beach southeast of Athens. A lovely fishing port as well as it's charming beach.. Several restaurants on the beach offer locally caught fish.
There are a few small scattered beaches between Anavissos and Cape Sounion. In Sounion itself there is a small beach below the temple with two tavernas. Anavissos has a long beach with lots of fish tavernas and is a favourite place for Athenians themselves to visit.
